No Turkish necessary. The gate was closed with tape and for the briefest moment I thought about sticking my head in.

This plain looking wall is reconstruction of one of the walls of Halicarnassus (what a great name). Halicarnassus (Ancient Greek: Ἁλικαρνᾱσσός, Halikarnassós or Ἀλικαρνασσός, Alikarnassós; Turkish: Halikarnas) was an ancient Greek city at the site of modern Bodrum in Turkey. It was located in southwest Caria on a picturesque, advantageous site on the Ceramic Gulf. The city was famous for the tomb of Mausolus, from whence we get the word mausoleum, built between 353 BC and 350 BC, and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. It was part of the Persian Empire until captured by Alexander the Great at the siege of Halicarnassus in 334 BC.

The space between the walls was once where a great gate was placed. But the big gate was a trick. Once the enemy broke in, they were caught in a crossfire from the walls on 3 sides. the real gat was too small to let a large number of people through.

Looking down on one of the many resort hotels that dot the shore. Cen told us a funny story about Salmacis and Hermaphroditus (look it up) which he says happened right where that hotel is located.
