The art takes advantage of the natural layout of the rocks.
There is also natural "art" on the rocks.
This is very old. Depending on how your monitor is set up, you may need to move your head around to get a better view.
A phoenix? A Thunderbird? I don't know. It does look a lot like the logo we use at IAIA to me.
You have to presume that this has meaning, given how much work had to have gone into it to create all the shapes.
Some of the cactus was in bloom. Those spines will go right through some shoes.
This petroglyph is also difficult to see. The docent who explained it suggested that it might be a birth scene. If you look carefully, you may agree.
Again, you have to look carefully, but this is real 3-D art.
The new Foundry and Sulpture building at IAIA held its first public pouring in May. Since it is just a few steps from my office, I was very interested in seeing the process. These molds will be filled with molten metal in a short time.
I could not begin to give you an accurate description of the process but all of the artists with whom Patricia and I spoke were happy to explain what they were doing. In this case, a mold is being examined for cracks and repaired.
Many finished pieces are made up of component pieces that have to be joined. So, the molds often don't resemble anything that makes sense.
Saftey was very important. Dan Collett ran a tight ship. Here the team is getting ready to light the furnace.
A consultation on process.
During the day you could hardly see the flames / burning gases from the furnace. In the evening, they were much more vivid.
Inside the glowing vessel is molten bronze.
This ceramic vessel cracked and part of it broke off. That made this first pour of the day nerve-wracking.
