The church of São Christovão was almost directly across the street from our apartment. The original church on the site (13th century) was destroyed by fire and this church was built on the ruins and opened in 1672.

Praça do Comércio (Commerce Square) or Terreiro do Paço (Palace Square) is where the royal palace stood until the 1755 earthquake and subsequent tidal wave. The disaster destroyed most of the buildings in the area. The Tagus river is in the background.
