The Roman ruins are protected by a series of walls that give some idea of the original buildings.

The castle is actually a reconstruction of what was once here.

The castle is one of the most-visited tourist sites in the city.

Even in early October, many of the trees had blossoms.

Peacocks roam the grounds.

We never heard any of the peacocks call.

The Torre de Belém (Tower of Belem) was built in the early 1500s. Before the earthquake, it was on a small island in the river. Now it is on the banks of the river.

The architecture is Manueline. The fortress, which helped protect the entrance to the city, was lost to the Spanish in 1580.

The 25 de Abril Bridge (25th April Bridge) is sometimes compared to the Golden Gate bridge.

We didn't have time to take a river cruise.

There were several marinas in the area. This one is near the monument to discovery.

The monument (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) was originally created in cardboard for an exposition and proved so popular that it was recreated in stone.
