We visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park When we got there, the crater was obscured by clouds and rain

Even though the weather was not great, we headed along the Crater Rim Trail.
On the rim trail we saw several kinds of plants.
The caldera is vast. The orange spot in the middle is probably a mile and a half away and several hundred feet below.
It was still raining and the space was filled with mist.
We thought this was a unique way to distribute seeds.

All of a sudden, the rain stopped and we could see the caldera. That is not mud on the floor, but cooled lava.

Just the caldera floor. The mounds are lava vents.
As we drove, we found multiple lava flows.
Noah is going to lead us on a little exploration of a lava flow.
This one would have been too easy for him.
This is an older lava flow and you can see that the plants are making inroads.
These lava deposits are different from the new deposits we saw a couple of days previously.
Some of the formations look like melted wax.
